Week ending May 11^th

What a wet week!!! This week we have had 28mm (1.1 inches) of rain, already the monthly total is 49mm (just short of 2 inches!). This has meant that the course is very wet although as we are on chalk it does drain very well.

The course has started to grow in places and where we are able to we have been cutting the semi rough, fairways and tees. This may mean a bit of mess / ‘clumpy’ grass clippings lying around; this will decrease as we get drier.

Due to having our bunkers ‘lined’ with a product called Sportcrete which aides, among other things, drainage they have remained reasonably dry and manageable so we have kept them looking good.

With the temperature’s getting warmer we should start to see a change in the greens as the fine grasses start to wake up and grow.

Just a short note to confirm that our Twilight times from Friday 1st June 2012 will be as follows;

9 Holes after 6.30pm – £7.50.

18 Holes after 4.30pm – £15.00.

In April, at Clandon Golf, we had 161mm of rainfall. This is about 30% of the total rainfall we had last year! The cold night time temperatures have meant that the soil temperature did not rise significantly – hence the reason that the grass did not grow as one would expect. This has meant that the winter wear did not recover as soon as we would have liked.

Current

The grass is now just starting to grow a little – particularly the rough. However, the continued wet conditions have stopped us doing as much cutting as we would have liked. In these circumstances we are faced with the dilemma – do we cut and make a mess or wait for it to dry out? All greens, tees and approaches have been fertilized and bunkers topped with sand.

Greens will be dressed and over-seeded as soon as we get the weather for doing this work.

We are also pleased to announce that we will be holding a Stableford Competition and Medal Competition every month. The Stableford Competition will be held on the Saturday and the Medal on the Sunday. The dates are as follows;

February 18/19. March 10/11. April 14/15, May 12/13, June 9/10, July 14/15, August 18/19, September 15/16, October 13/14, November 17/18 and December 15/16.
